How do you know if mobile marketing is for you? Are you confused by terms such as SMS and an app? What's the difference anyway? What will it cost to get involved?


These are all fantastic questions and the questions many small businesses are asking themselves when it comes to mobile marketing. Just like any marketing endeavor, it's important to be educated so that you can make the right decision for you and your business.

What is mobile marketing?

As it pertains to this article, mobile marketing is marketing on or with a mobile device.

I recently had an opportunity to sit down with an expert mobile marketer. In my discussions with him, I had you in mind and asked him the questions that I think most businesses are curious about when it comes to mobile marketing.

We hear a lot about SMS and Apps. What do you suggest for the small- to medium-sized business?
It's important to keep your goal in mind, which is to provide your consumers information that is easy to find. An application will require a smartphone. Using SMS will connect directly to most mobile phones and can be used as a great connection tool. It boils down to selecting an application or optimizing for your consumers. Not all consumers have smartphones, but the majority can receive SMS. You want to select the option that is available, discoverable and presentable to your specific target market. SMS doesn't limit the type of phone consumers have; this is important to remember.

Over the next few years, you will see trend that mobile marketing effectiveness will have a lot to do with mobile browser capability and less about apps. Mobile web browser capability is important, and it's where we will see the growth. Invest in something that is more open — don't limit who can see or receive your information.

When most businesses think about mobile marketing, they think it's expensive. How much should a company expect to pay for mobile marketing?

Don't use mobile marketing to repeat offers that you are broadcasting elsewhere — make the offer unique and something that they won't find elsewhere. Offerings must be unique to be valuable.

What about regulations? What do businesses looking into mobile marketing need to know, and where can they find information?

It's important that companies become aware of regulations put out by the MMA (Mobile Marketing Association). The MMA is the guardian angel or watchdog, if you will, of mobile marketing. They have close ties with carriers and, because of that, they have developed guidelines for best practices. If there is mobile marketing abuse, it will be stopped.

There is so much information here, and even I am surprised by how inexpensive it is to get started. If a company is interested, where do they start?

Our report also spotlights similar statistics for all the main social networks, but Facebook's numbers are perhaps the most compelling.

Here are seven of our surprising findings on Facebook:

  • Population and Penetration: Yes, we know that over 1 billion people are on the platform. But what's the penetration rate in a major market like the U.S.? 67% of Internet users in the U.S. are on Facebook.
  • Age: Facebook still skews young. In the U.S., 83% of 18 to 29-year-olds who use the Internet are on it, but the proportion is only 67% across all age brackets. However, the 45- to 54-year-old age bracket has seen 46% growth since year-end 2012. 
  • Income: Among U.S. Internet users, 73% with incomes above $75,000 are on Facebook (compared to 17% who are on Twitter, and 13% who are on Pinterest).
    Mobile:
    Facebook is the most popular social media app on smartphones and accounts for 66% of total social media sharing on iPhones.
  • International: Eight-six percent of Facebook's users are outside the U.S. And 29% of its users log in from Asian countries. 
  • Gender: Facebook skews slightly toward women. But it is more gender neutral than Pinterest and Google+.
  • Education: Nearly 75% of U.S. Internet users who have had at least some education in college use Facebook, according to Pew Research.

Wow, its amazing to watch how fast the mobile revolution has happened.  When I begin working with a client, there is no tracking usually in place, so there is no way to see who is visiting websites or social streams.  

Once we turn on our programs for our clients, things start to light up and we can watch the true metrics happen in front of our eyes.  No matter what size market we work within, the mobile consumer is at least half, if not more than all of the traffic. 

Once we turn on the mobile capture aspects for our clients ( see Gloryview, Global or Baypoint) we start to see a great trend occur.  Mobile browsers will enter information when you treat them properly.  When I work on a website, mobile app, or social channell, I am constantly looking at the appearance of the page and how the mobile browser sees things.  As soon as I notice a "crack" or, the mobile browser has to zoom in or out (pinch/squeeze), I will also notice one other thing.  Traffic dies at that point.

So, if you have a website, have you tried to browse to it lately? Is it engaging? Can you easily click to call or click for a map to your location? Is there a way for me to enter information via a simple web form so I receive a valuable offer or coupon? Is your email and mobile list growing or dying?

These are what the growing mobile consumer not only expects but demands, and the businesses that realize this and realize this fast, are the ones that will profit the most.

To many, the mere mention of "mobile marketing" conjures images of apps, unexpected SMS updates, and QR codes. But there's a lot more to on-the-go campaigns than these tactics suggest. 

Your brand's presence on users' devices isn't limited to these or even to mobile sites or intrusive mobile advertising. 

It's time to move beyond apps and consider the range of content that can be delivered directly to consumers through their devices -- the moment they ask for it. Fortunately, the same efforts used to deliver the real-time engagement users demand can produce the real-time results that you crave.

There are many types of mobile content, but there are five that stand out as particularly effective. See how the following types of content can work either independently to produce compelling, real-time results or in tandem with your other marketing channels to bridge otherwise disparate efforts.


Mobile Coupons

If your goal is to drive real-time sales and/or in-store traffic, one of the most effective types of content is the mobile coupon. Mobile coupons are a far cry from the glossy clippings your mother used to snip from her newspaper on Sunday mornings.
