Have you gone mobile with your money? Survey says most Americans have

Smartphones have become an essential part of everyday life; from texting and email to social media, Americans rely heavily on their mobile devices. If your mobile phone was taken away, how long could you survive without it?

The answer may surprise you: nearly half (47 percent) of U.S. consumers polled say they could not go more than one day without their smartphone, according to the inaugural Bank of America Trends in Consumer Mobility Report. An overwhelming majority (85 percent) say they check their phones at least a few times a day, while more than one-third (35 percent) admit to constantly checking their mobile device.

The survey, which explored mobile trends and banking behaviors among adults across the country, found the need for constant connectivity also extends to banking. Of those respondents who said they use their phones for mobile banking, almost one-third (31 percent) say they log on at least once a day, and more than four out of five (82 percent) access their accounts at least once a week or more.

The report revealed further interesting insights into consumer mobile banking behaviors and preferences, including:

* Mobile banking is on the rise. More than half (62 percent) of respondents have at least tried mobile banking, while an overwhelming majority (90 percent) are using online banking. When using their bank’s mobile app, U.S. consumers most commonly check their balance, transfer funds between accounts and pay bills.

* Sophisticated banking transactions becoming more prevalent on mobile devices. Consumers are also using their smartphones for more complex transactions, including mobile check deposit. Nearly six in 10 (58 percent) respondents have used mobile check deposit, and 38 percent use it frequently. “Our customers appreciate the convenience of being able to complete their deposit anytime, anywhere and are depositing an average of 170 thousand checks via mobile device every day,” says Marc Warshawsky, mobile solutions executive at Bank of America.

* Consumers prefer a mix of banking options. Mobile and online banking are becoming more widely used, but visits to bank branches are still common. The survey found that 84 percent of respondents have visited a bank branch within the past six months. Most commonly, Americans make a trip to the bank to make a deposit, withdraw funds and speak with a banking associate. However, just 23 percent of respondents say they complete the majority of their banking transactions at a branch. Nearly half (47 percent) report turning to mobile or online banking as their preferred method.

* Consumers comfortable with added security measures. In the next two years, 60 percent of consumers say they would be comfortable with a fingerprint scan/swipe security feature to gain access to their mobile banking app. Nearly one-third expressed comfort with retina scans (32 percent) and voice recognition (33 percent).

Who's watching this thing happen?

Wow, its amazing to watch how fast the mobile revolution has happened.  When I begin working with a client, there is no tracking usually in place, so there is no way to see who is visiting websites or social streams.  

Once we turn on our programs for our clients, things start to light up and we can watch the true metrics happen in front of our eyes.  No matter what size market we work within, the mobile consumer is at least half, if not more than all of the traffic. 

Once we turn on the mobile capture aspects for our clients ( see Gloryview, Global or Baypoint) we start to see a great trend occur.  Mobile browsers will enter information when you treat them properly.  When I work on a website, mobile app, or social channell, I am constantly looking at the appearance of the page and how the mobile browser sees things.  As soon as I notice a "crack" or, the mobile browser has to zoom in or out (pinch/squeeze), I will also notice one other thing.  Traffic dies at that point.

So, if you have a website, have you tried to browse to it lately? Is it engaging? Can you easily click to call or click for a map to your location? Is there a way for me to enter information via a simple web form so I receive a valuable offer or coupon? Is your email and mobile list growing or dying?

These are what the growing mobile consumer not only expects but demands, and the businesses that realize this and realize this fast, are the ones that will profit the most.

To many, the mere mention of "mobile marketing" conjures images of apps, unexpected SMS updates, and QR codes. But there's a lot more to on-the-go campaigns than these tactics suggest. 

Your brand's presence on users' devices isn't limited to these or even to mobile sites or intrusive mobile advertising. 

It's time to move beyond apps and consider the range of content that can be delivered directly to consumers through their devices -- the moment they ask for it. Fortunately, the same efforts used to deliver the real-time engagement users demand can produce the real-time results that you crave.

There are many types of mobile content, but there are five that stand out as particularly effective. See how the following types of content can work either independently to produce compelling, real-time results or in tandem with your other marketing channels to bridge otherwise disparate efforts.


Mobile Coupons

If your goal is to drive real-time sales and/or in-store traffic, one of the most effective types of content is the mobile coupon. Mobile coupons are a far cry from the glossy clippings your mother used to snip from her newspaper on Sunday mornings. Done well, these digital morsels of traffic-driving goodness arrive just in time to fulfill a consumer's need instantly. Out of 31,000 monthly page views, Twitter easily delivers more than half of my blog’s traffic. It also has created new business opportunities for my consultancy and for me clients. Here are some amazing Twitter Stats:

  • There are 175 million tweets sent from Twitter every day in 2012 (Infographics Labs)

Here are some of the Tweet writing instructions and tips you’ll find in Gerry’s infographic:

  • Tell readers what you want them to do
  • Use good punctuation including capital letters, no txt speak and avoid all caps!
  • Shorten all URLs
  • Make 90% of your tweets link to articles, blog posts, pictures or video that relate to your message
  • Include 1-2 hashtags in each message to increase reach among non-followers
  • Use your own voice in a professional way to add some personality
  • Use a mix of headlines, questions, facts & figures to drive clicks and retweets (RT)
  • Use mentions and retweets to call out authors
  • Leave 20 characters for retweeters to add content
